| Best gig I played at... | Bradford Rios - 1997-ish - was seriously w*nkered. Everyone thought I was dancing when I was trying to figure out which of the three options was the real distortion pedal! Added our grafitti to the dressing room walls with the rich and famous! |
Having been told by his junior school music teacher that perhaps he ought to take up the drums because he was struggling with an A chord, Dave thought 'b*ll*cks' to you - I'll teach myself instead' and promptly marched off down to 'Contact' on Boar Lane (anyone remember them?!) where he bought a very, very cheap Kay guitar which he tried to wire to his Dad's radiogram - the resulting carnage convinced him he should have bought an Amp too!
In the late 80s, and several guitars later, during his Strat phase (everone has to go through it!), Dave crossed paths with Dave B who became a good friend and guitar mentor. Several years later (now safely into Gibson territory) this musical partnership spawned The Hiding Place amongst other musical projects including the acoustic busking duo Freefall (later renamed Uztoo).
The tragically early death of Lisa, Dave B's partner and the voice of The Hiding Place, ended the story of what had become a popular and highly respected (and rocking) local band. The two Daves diversified - Dave B into solo work and new band Vital Signs (also featuring another piece in the Resurgence Jigsaw - Mad Dog) - and our Dave into Sound Engineering and PA Systems - aka Gravest Hits, named for his first true love - The Cramps! In 2001 he could finally afford his dream guitar - the 6120 would be his (along with its own insurance policy)! After a few years working exclusively for local rock legends Valhalla and developing a great reputation as a soundman Dave found he was missing performing live and the stage was set for a 'resurgence'.
Having been 'stand-in finger' for Vital Signs for a few gigs our Dave now knew Mad Dog, and they both knew Jo Jo from jam sessions at McGuires (quote: 'That bird can sing, who's she? Hey, wanna be in a band?), Dave already had the familial rhythm section and so a band was born. Resurgence first rehearsed on 21 July 2004..... and first gigged on 6 August 2004!
Dave is also the 'sometime' bassist for local rockers Tantrum and still provides PA and sound for other bands when Resurgence are 'off duty'.
His hair-line might be receding but his attitude isn't. In the immortal words of Spinal Tap:
" Dave wants to have a good time all the time "
and therefore soul searching, dirges and up-own-aresedness are strictly off the menu!
